RE: speed limit

Just for a quick study in human nature - I wonder if the original poster would have had better luck getting the response he wanted if he stated the opposite opinion than what he expressed. It seems that a number of responders to his post are advocating slowing down and going slower. If the poster had stated that he couldn't stand people doing the speed limit and above and that all people should slow down - would he have gotten responses stating that people should do the speed limit and that slow drivers are a danger to the road? Just wondering if the same responders would have responded the opposite way.

RE: I couldn't believe my ears!!

Just to play a little devil's advocate here - the flip side of this is that with RV sales marginal at best with fuel prices the way they are - this would be a great incentive to someone just thinking about buying an RV. They could throw in the site for a year, which would allow them to reduce thier RV inventory and the buyer wouldn't have to worry about fuel prices or even worry about if they have the proper tow vehicle. If they have a choice of reducing their inventory with the sale of a 20k rv or renting a site for 2k or so (which they could always rent later if need be) it would make sense to save the site. If this campground is as nice as you say it is, I'm sure they probably can afford to set aside a few seasonal sites with the expectation they will rent them next year if they don't need them for RV sales. Again - just playing a little devil's advocate here!

RE: Direct TV or Dish JUST in MH?

Here's a link to a company that offers pre-paid Dish service. It sounds like it works just like a pay as you go phone. You buy a pre paid card and activate it when you need/want it.

A few observations from Myrtle Beach

We just got back from a week at Lakewood. It was hot and humid the whole time but, fortunately we avoided any prolonged rain events and skirted any major storms. A couple of things that I did notice. First, it seemed strange and out of place, but it looked like motorhomes were outnumbered at least 10 to 1. On previous trips down it always seemed to be at least a 50/50 ratio of motorhomes and other campers (TT's, Hybrids, PU's), but not this year - motorhomes were in the minority. The other thing I noticed that really stood out was the erosion on the beach. The dredging of new sand has built up the "stable" beach area so high that it really has become a "mini" mountain to climb up. I remember in previous years that this was a nice slope to the ocean. The last night we were there I remember looking over to Pirateland at high tide and seeing very little beach area - maybe 75' or so. The beach suddenly dropped down 2' or so to make a mini cliff to the ocean. I guess I'm just getting old and wishing some things would never change.

RE: Overnight stay on either I-81S or I-95S, in VA

Fredericksburg has a Super Walmart right off I95 at exit 130B. I've seen a number of RV's utilize it. There's also the Fredericksburg KOA at the next exit down (I believe it's exit 127), but it's a good 10 miles from 95 and roughly $50.00 for the night. Also, there is Aquia Pines campground, which is literally 2 minutes from I95 at exit 143A in Stafford. You could certainly call ahead to check availability and fall back to the Super Walmart if neither campground has anything.

What kind of grease?

What kind of grease should be used when lubricating the tow ball on a standard weight distribution hitch? I also have the round type weight distribution bars and it looks like I could use some grease in the hitch head for them also. Thanks.

RE: T.V. picture fades/brightens while watching DVD?

I'm no expert on this, but I believe it could be the security encoding on the DVD when you run it through the VCR. I seem to remember that they did this to prevent recording the DVD to tape. Try going directly from the DVD player to the TV and see if that solves the problem.

RE: which digital convertor box is the best.

Are you sure you need one? All of the newer televisons are already digital. I would think that any LCD tv out now would have the digital tuner.

Hard Rock Park in Myrtle Beach

Anyone been to the new Hard Rock Park in Myrtle Beach yet? We'll be down there the end of the month and we're thinking about checking it out. Was it worth it? Any suggestions for discount tickets? When is the best time to go?

RE: Car Dolly behind Diesel Pusher...and then?

You could get a new tow dolly and try one of these It combines a tow dolly with atv/golf cart platform and doesn't significantly increase the overall length of the original dolly. On edit - I see someone beat me to it and posted a link to one.

RE: Anyone using an Audiovox Voyager AWM930 stereo?

I had one that originally came in my trailer that died last year, I bought one off of ebay and so far it works great - although I guess that doesn't say much for the original one. I especially like the auxiliary inputs and the A/'B switch for the speakers, I ended up disconnecting one set of speakers that was in the bedroom ceiling and wiring up some outside speakers. I also ran a cable from the aux input outside so I can plug in my IPOD.

RE: Crazy family of 7 getting ready to live in TT for a year!

You should contact the Discovery channel and pitch the idea to them as a reality show. Maybe they would bankroll a nice new motorhome or trailer and fund all your expenses. :)

RE: Camp Grounds around Washington DC

Bull Run Regional Park is in Centerville, but it's really almost Manasas. Very close to route 66. They've just added 50 amp and sewer sites and the park itself has a huge pool complex with water slides. We drove through it in eatly April and they were still working on finishing the sewer lines. Should be done by now. While I haven't stayed there to personally vouch for it, we do have reservations to stay there over the 4th of July.

RE: tractor trailer cross wind

One little trick I learned was to speed up just a little as the truck approaches to pass. So many times our reaction is let off the gas and even brake as a truck passes, this will only compound the sway issue. When you speed up, you pull the trailer straight and help eliminate some of the sway. It obviously helps if you can see the truck coming in your mirrors and even slow down some so when you accelerate your still at an acceptable speed. It's definitely something you have to be vigilant about and be able to plan, it won't help you if don't see the truck coming and it zooms by at 80mph. It will work in traffic if you keep enough distance and slow down as the truck approaches.

RE: bumber sinks 2 inches on truck when camper is lowered

KBw28wildwwod - hope this makes sense and I'm not giving you information you already know. The tilt of the hitch head has nothing to do with the height of the ball. Here is a link to some detailed instructions on the proper way to set up a weight distribution hitch. The hitch head assembly is #2 on page 2 of the instructions. Once you determine what the correct height of the hitch head assembly should be and attach it to the shank, the hitch head should have the capability to adjust/tilt up or down. By tilting this down, it also tilts the position of the weight distribution bars down, thus giving you more adjustment/lift from your bars.

RE: bumber sinks 2 inches on truck when camper is lowered

Just off hand (and assuming we're talking a travel trailer and not a 5th wheel) I would say that your hitch head needs to be adjusted/tilted down. This would give your distribution bars additional clearance to be adjusted tighter.

RE: Front bumper hitch to help park TT ??

Another option, if you have room, would be to drive it straight in and then drop the trailer and use a powermover dollie to turn it around and park it. Using a front receiver up a curvy 250' driveway could be harder than backing it up.

RE: Marine Corps Museum

Well I'm not a JarHead, but my son was. We live a few miles from the museum and have been to it once for a retirement ceremony for our neighbor. It's really quite impressive, although we weren't able to see it all in the limited time we were there. You shouldn't have any problem getting onto the base since the base actually surrounds the town of Quantico and people come and go there. The base also has a small campground on it - Lunga Park. I can't vouch for it since I've never been there. There are a couple of other campgrounds close by Aquia Pines is about 5 miles south of the museum and there is also Travel Trailer Village which is in Dumfries - about 15 mintes away. As far as other thing to do - you won't be far from Fredericksburg and Manassas - BIG civil war things with battlefields and other tourist things (George Washington's boyhood home). Kings Dominion amusement park is about 50 miles further south down 95. You won't be lacking for things to do in the area.
